They probably got absorbed. [... Eaten. Or joined.] Some are still around, some blended in with the demons, others are just magical non-diabolic denizens. If you try hard enough, you might be able to identify them better.
I don't think this could be a late curse blowback, however. It's been many millennia. Long before I came here.
